Is now the time to migrate to Magento 2?

March 11th, 2019

Magento have confirmed they will be stopping support for Magento 1 in June 2020, making Magento 2 their main ongoing focus. This certainly doesn't mean that Magento 1 stores will stop working overnight but it does mean that if you are a Magento 1 store owner you will need to start thinking about the future plans for a platform that will eventually become obsolete. You’ll no longer be able to get support, security patches or updates for your site. Your site will still exist, but at a huge risk to your business.

Migrating to Magento 2 can be quite a tall order for a store owner when you consider all the various plugins and template tweaks that may have been made to a site over the years, but if you run a Magento 1 store than you should be starting to plan how you're going to migrate.

Depending on the complexities of your current Magento 1 site it may be worth approaching it from a re-build perspective. This could be a great opportunity to consider a design refresh or to iron out those niggles that have always hindered the usability of your existing site or even to explore alternative solutions to Magento such as Wordpress with WooCommerce or Shopify.

At DOT we're experienced in both Magento 1 and Magento 2 as well as a wide-range of up-to-date technologies, platforms, web design and branding and can be on hand to assist with a transition that is best for your e-commerce store and an exciting new chapter for your site.
